Get FIRED UP mentally next time you play!! Unless that’s not what you need…

YouTube determined that the request did not contain proper authentication.

Can you picture the typical pre-game psych-up session?  All the players yelling, dancing, and getting fired up with some loud, killer music?  Or the coach giving a really passionate speech to the the troops all riled up…

What if that was exactly the wrong way to get ready to play your best?  Turns out that it’s just about the worst way to get prepared.

There’s an optimal level of intensity for competition, and it varies by sport, position, and even individual.

Sport Psychologist Dr. Jim Taylor has written extensively on the optimal intensity for performance, and coached hundreds of athletes on the topic.  He’s the mental training expert today on the  Athlete’s Audio Academy, and he’s been with us before to talk about imagery, and about confidence.

Dr. Taylor is the author of 12 books and blogs on business, sports, parenting, technology, education, politics, and popular culture on his web site, as well as on psychologytoday.com, huffingtonpost.com.

Dr. Taylor has appeared on NBC’s Today Show, Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends, UPN’s Life & Style, ABC’s World News This Weekend

Do you make worse decisions as the day goes on?

YouTube determined that the request did not contain proper authentication.

A great deal of research has gone into the idea of decision fatigue, and Sport Psychologist Dr. Michelle Cleere (of ShareCare.com and DrMichelleCleere.com) is with us on the Athlete’s Audio Academy to talk about it.

The impetus for our conversation was an article in the New York Times measuring a number of different fields, and the impact that time of day, and number of previous decisions had on outcomes.  There’s another factor that contributes to the quality of your decision, too…but you have to watch to find out!

Dr Cleere has joined us before to talk about the difference between Sport Psychology, and Exercise Psychology, and she’s a practiced expert in both.

Dr. Michelle Cleere is a Clinical Psychologist who specializes in breaking emotional patterns that hold people from achieving their physical goals; whether the motivation is to get healthier or beat the competition.

With a PhD in Clinical Psychology and an MA in Sports Psychology, Dr. Michelle is one of the leading experts in exercise and sports psychology. She serves on the faculty of JFK University, works with Doctor Oz and has written for Triathlete Magazine and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She is also the author of: The Experience of Participating in a Triathlon: from the perspective of two women and Shifting Gears: How Women Triathletes Balance Life with Sport.

YouTube determined that the request did not contain proper authentication.

A Sport Psychology book for kids, (called Tour de You) using cycling as the theme hit the stands in the last year, and KC Wilder, PhD, knows both ends of that spectrum….the cycling, and the Sport Psychology.

She’s a PhD in Sport Psychology from Virginia, and a National champion cyclist.

Today, on the Athlete’s Audio Academy, it’s KC’s second visit, (first one’s here) and we discuss the idea of ‘Training to Trust’. That is, planning, preparing, and practicing in your training sessions so that you can just let it flow, and trust in your skills when the flag drops.

kcwilderco.com is her website, and she has articles, and additional information about her book there.

K.C. began her career with a 1989 Brown University bachelor’s degree in organizational behavior and management. She then focused on sport psychology, earning masters and doctoral degrees in that field from the University of Virginia. Her own athletic career is distinguished, with All-American cycling honors at UVA, a top twenty U.S. professional cycling ranking, two national Master’s championships, and a top ten finish in the Masters World Track championships among her numerous accomplishments.

Oh, God…now I have to go to the (gulp) gym??  Worse….do I have to hire a trainer??

Is there a Home Court advantage? (& How does the mind play into it!?)

YouTube determined that the request did not contain proper authentication.

Recently minted Masters in Sport Psychology, Brian Levenson of Washington DC, and CoreMentalTraining.com joins us today to talk about his fascinating research on Home court (or field, or ice, or gym) advantage. Brian interviewed a number of NBA players as a part of his research, and shares that with us on the Athlete’s Audio Academy. Brian, along with the writers of Scorecasting have discovered that it does in fact exist, and can be a factor of referees, different routines, and rituals, different sleep habits, and even different game plans that contribute to playing differently at home, and on the road.

Brian Levenson is a mental training consultant based in the Washington D.C. area. Born and raised in the D.C. suburbs, Brian moved to San Francisco to get his M.A. in Sport Psychology.

Brian is also partnered with the Center for Athletic Performance Enhancement (CAPE). CAPE was founded by Julie Elion who is one of the premier Sport Psychology Consultants in the Nation. CAPE specializes in working with professional and amateur athletes who seek to enhance their athletic performance through a focused approach to the mental aspects of their sport.

A super-energetic guy, and prolific writer on his daily email newsletter, and twitter, enjoy Brian’s work to help your game, at home OR on the road!
