While at the AASP Conference in Providence, RI over the Halloween weekend, I asked around “Who’s the best person to talk to about anger in sports?”
Everyone that I asked the question to said that same thing. Dr Mitch Abrams.
Mitch presented 4 separate topics to his peers at the AASP Conference as a testament to his expertise.
Mitch has some great points about ‘Instrumental Aggression’, which he defines as the will, and passion to follow your goals, and ‘Reactive Aggression’ where your anger takes you away from wanting to even concentrate on the game.
Mitch has written a book, called Anger Management in Sport.
While developing the only comprehensive anger management program for athletes, Dr. Abrams began consulting with athletes twelve years ago. He has created a niche for himself utilizing anger management training to assist athletes reach peak performance on the field and in life. He has consulted with thousands of athletes and has developed programs for athletic organizations at the Youth Sport, High School and College levels.
He is a full member of the American Psychological Association as well as its Divisions 47 - Division of Exercise and Sport Psychology and Division 41 – The American Psychology-Law Society. Further, he holds membership in the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), where he is also the Chair of the “Anger & Violence in Sport” Special Interest Group.
